No Cancer Risk in Using Deodorants, Study Finds

A study prompted by an urban myth circulated on the Internet shows there is no evidence that antiperspirants or deodorants cause breast cancer.
The study, in this week’s Journal of the National Cancer Institute, examined the personal hygiene habits of 813 women with breast cancer and 793 women without the disease and found no link between cancer and body odor control cosmetics.
“Antiperspirant and deodorant use did not differ whether or not a participant [in the study] had breast cancer,” said Dana K. Mirick, an epidemiologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. This indicates, she said, that use of such products does not cause cancer.
