From Times Wire Reports

The principal of a high school where students clashed with police last week has resigned.

Thurgood Marshall High Principal Juliet Montevirgen said she was resigning in the best interest of the 1,100 students.

Montevirgen was named principal two months ago when school district Supt. Arlene Ackerman did not renew former Principal Samuel Butscher’s contract.

Many parents, teachers and students believed he was replaced because he criticized the district’s decision to lower the number of credits required to graduate.

Teachers had threatened a boycott Thursday if Montevirgen was not replaced.
