From Times Wire Reports

The Big Sur area is one of the hardest hit by the tree-killing disease known as sudden oak death, officials said.

Hundreds of logs are piled near the campground at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, waiting to be burned. Monterey County has been pretty much spared by the ailment, which has done most of its damage in Marin County and the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Trees as big as 4 feet across and 100 feet high have died, and sick trees are everywhere, said Tom Moss, senior resource ecologist for the state park system’s Monterey district.
