U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman declared the entire state of Nevada a disaster area due to prolonged drought, making ranchers and farmers eligible for emergency loans.

Gov. Kenny Guinn earlier urged USDA officials to declare all 17 counties a disaster area as the state is anticipating its fourth consecutive dry winter.

The past summer was the state’s driest on record, according to the National Climatic Data Center, and Nevada joined half the country in suffering through extreme drought conditions.
