The Shots Heard ‘Round the WNBA

Two members of the Sparks are on the short list of the most memorable shots in WNBA history:

Sept. 4, 1999: Da Bomb

With the New York Liberty down by two and on the verge of elimination in the 1999 Finals, Teresa Weatherspoon heaved a 50-foot shot that banked in and gave the Liberty a 68-67 victory over Houston.

July 30, 2002: Above the Rim

Finally, the time was right and everything fell into place: Midway through the first half of a game against Miami, the Sparks’ Lisa Leslie was alone in transition, drove to the basket and became the first player to dunk in a WNBA game.

Aug. 31, 2002: Threesley

It must be something about players from North Carolina. Michael Jordan (1982) and Charlotte Smith (1994) won NCAA titles with last-minute shots for the Tar Heels. Rookie Nikki Teasley didn’t perform the deed until she reached the pros, her three-pointer with 2.4 seconds to play giving the Sparks a 69-66 victory over New York and their second straight title.
