Capt. Cook Letter Found Hidden in House
A dispatch penned by explorer Capt. James Cook on his return from his first voyage to Australia more than two centuries ago has been found in the back of a picture frame in an English country house.
Bonhams auction house, which is selling the contents of Brancaster Hall in Norfolk, said it expected the dispatch to sell for between $23,000 and $31,000. The auction is to take place Monday.
An employee of Bonhams found the letter to the British Admiralty as he was listing the contents of the house, which has been owned by one family for 300 years.
