Girls Close to Mom Less Likely to Have Early Sex

Teen girls who are close to their mothers are more likely to stay virgins longer, researchers reported.

The key for parents, experts say, is not just talking about sex, but being involved in their kids’ lives.

“The message to parents is: You matter,” said Sarah Brown, director of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.

By the ninth grade, 34% of teens have had sexual intercourse, and that rises to 60% by 12th grade.

Researchers said 50% of moms of sexually active teens didn’t realize their kids were having sex. “Perhaps it’s because they don’t want to know,” the University of Minnesota’s Dr. Robert Blum said.
