Government troops, backed by fighter jets and helicopters, killed 22 leftist rebels in clashes in Colombia’s southwestern mountains, the military said.

The fighting took place in the village of Planadas, 175 miles southwest of Bogota, the capital.

Gen. Hernan Alonso Ortiz, commander of the elite Rapid Deployment Force, said fighting with rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, continued with airstrikes against rebel positions. No casualties among government troops had been reported, he said.
