Pondering Gravitational Waves

Preston Lerner’s article (“Crunch Time,” Aug. 11) said that the biggest gravitational waves are produced by events such as the collision of two black holes, and then another paragraph said that the interferometer may be able to measure gravitational waves from a “distant universe.” Is the intent of the project to measure gravitational waves within our universe, or has it been determined that there are other universes and we are trying to measure gravitational waves from them?
