Tropical Storm Gustav Upgraded to Hurricane
Tropical storm Gustav was upgraded to a hurricane, the first of the Atlantic season, as it headed toward the Canadian Maritimes, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Gustav, which dumped as much as 6 inches of rain on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, had strengthened, with maximum sustained winds as great as 90 mph, the hurricane center said. The minimum for a hurricane is 74 mph.
The Canadian government issued heavy rain and wind warnings for all of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and parts of Newfoundland and New Brunswick.
Gustav was forecast to weaken today as it moves away from tropical weather, the center said.
Gustav is the seventh named storm of this hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30.
