Officials plan to enforce a new dress code for scantily clad women who sell betel nut at more than 1,000 roadside stands in the northern county of Taoyuan, a police spokesman said.

Starting Oct. 15, the women--called la meizi, or “spice girls” in local slang--won’t be allowed to wear transparent or belly-revealing tops. Skimpy skirts and shorts are also out. “It’s just too easy for drivers to have accidents as they turn to gawk at the women. We’ve already had many crashes,” he said.
