At least eight people died when fighting erupted between forces loyal to rival warlords in northern Afghanistan, witnesses said.

The clashes, in the Qaleh Shahr area of Sari Pol province and in the Chamtal district of the city of Mazar-i-Sharif, involved fighters loyal to Uzbek warlord Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and his Tajik rival Atta Mohammed.

Gen. Abdul Saboor, a commander of Atta’s faction, said local authorities had forced an end to the fighting in Chamtal but that intense fighting was continuing in Qaleh Shahr.
