Lawmaker Says Gunmen Killed 183; Probe Sought
From Times Wire Reports
A senior lawmaker demanded an inquiry into reports that unidentified gunmen had killed 183 people, mostly civilians, in central Burundi this month.
The head of parliament’s human rights commission, Leonidas Ntibayazi, said officials in Gitega province reported that the victims were fleeing clashes between Hutu rebels and the Tutsi-led army Sept. 9. They took refuge in houses about 75 miles northeast of the capital, Bujumbura, and were shot to death. There was no independent confirmation of the deaths.
