Border City May Be New Economic Zone

North Korea has made the city of Shinuiju on its border with China a “special administrative region”--a move that South Korean analysts said may be the first step toward a new economic zone.
The announcement by North Korea’s official news agency followed the impoverished Communist state’s introduction in July of price and wage changes analysts said represented tentative market reforms. However, the report did not state the purpose of the zone.
Shinuiju is on North Korea’s Yalu River border with China and is the final Korean peninsula stop on one of two North-South railroads that are being restored.
