Kenneth Turan’s Perspective on the emotional bankruptcy in contemporary commercial cinema (“Big Heart, Big Box Office,” Sept. 1) evokes the filmmaking philosophy of Sam Fuller (a man who certainly knew how to stir emotion and churn viscera): Film is a battleground. Love, hate, violence, action, death ... in a word, “emotion.” Perhaps the general anemic quality of current cinema would be alleviated if more directors adopted his credo.
