Yucatan Peninsula Braces for Hurricane
After battering western Cuba, Hurricane Isidore picked up power as it churned toward Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, famous for its Maya ruins and beach resorts.
Authorities canceled dozens of flights at Cancun’s airport and set up more than 2,000 emergency shelters to house families affected by flooding the storm was expected to bring. Police and soldiers evacuated more than 20,000 people from five fishing communities.
Officials said Isidore dumped about 25 inches of rain in 24 hours in Cuba’s tobacco-growing province of Pinar del Rio.
