Checking Mammograms
Reducing false positives by comparing current mammograms to previous films makes sense (Sept. 18). What does not make sense is the practice by U.S. physicians of not routinely providing patients with a copy of their results, even though the patients are the legal owners of the original film. Ensuring that patients are provided copies of all mammograms would facilitate the double-checking of results advocated by Dr. Joann Elmore without creating the monopoly relationship for the physician that guarantees future referrals. Obtaining copies later creates unnecessary hassles for patients if a new facility is used.
