Homelessness in Our City of Angels

Share

Your Sept. 19 editorial about helping the homeless off the streets and a related front-page story (“Skid Row Hotels Stack Deck With ‘Shuffle’ ”) were (ironically?) complemented by another article on a luxury kennel for cats (“Activist Sees New City as Fresh Start for Pets”). How sad that we live in a city--nay, a country--with such a disheartening disparity of income distribution. Am I the only one who finds it sickening that many animals enjoy better lives than humans do?

A commendation is in order for Sheriff Lee Baca for hosting a summit on homelessness at the Central Library in downtown Los Angeles (Sept. 18). It is shocking to discover that L.A. County has the highest number of people without shelter, according to several studies. In a Sept. 15 letter, Cardinal Roger Mahony asked that readers come up with suggested topics that might be discussed at the new conference center at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral. May I respectfully suggest that Mahony and his benefactors take a stroll down Los Angeles Street--starting at about 1st Street and extending to 6th Street. I think anyone who does that will get the point that this is a problem that should have the highest priority.
