Violent Storm Leaves 33 Dead in Capital
A thunderstorm toppled a Ferris wheel and sank a Nile River pleasure boat in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, killing 33 people, police said.
Seventeen people, mostly women and children, plunged to their deaths when the Ferris wheel they were riding at an amusement park collapsed during the storm Friday, Khartoum Police Chief Gen. Tarek Othman Taher said.
On the river, 16 people drowned when their boat sank in the storm, he said. The passengers were celebrating a wedding. The groom survived, but the bride drowned.
