Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who worked alongside presidents and other world leaders during his long public career, was remembered Monday as a man of compassion and dedication.

Msgr. Peter Vaghi presided over the retired Democratic senator’s funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Church.

“Pat Moynihan was a man of quiet faith,” Vaghi told about 700 mourners. “For him, this found expression in his long commitment to the body politic, the pursuit of the common good, and his special care for the poor, the family structure and the most needy in our midst.”

The mourners included dozens of lawmakers and other dignitaries from the decades Moynihan spent in public office, as an assistant to four presidents, an ambassador, and a four-term New York senator.

Moynihan died last week at 76, after complications from an appendectomy. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
