An Educated Populace May Know Too Much

An April 16 letter questioned the government’s priorities in distributing money for education in foreign countries while letting American education fall by the wayside. It’s really quite simple. If your job and perks depended every two to six years on convincing a simple majority of some segment of the population that you have done a really great job -- which you haven’t because you’ve spent most of the time bickering over what to call French fries, catering to well-heeled lobbyists and planning your strategy for the next election -- would you rather have well-educated voters able to tell rhetoric from reality or a populace unable to balance a checkbook, much less read and understand complicated legislation full of unrelated amendments designed to keep campaign finances flowing?
