Kick the Freeway Addiction, Los Angeles
Re “Hundreds Learn Plans to Expand 710 Freeway Threaten Their Homes,” April 13: What’s wrong with this picture? We just fought a war over fossil fuel. The air is polluted. There is a shortage of housing. School funding is inadequate. L.A.’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to buy and demolish thousands of units of housing to add lanes to a freeway. There must be a better use of a billion dollars.
Freeway building is like heroin addiction: just one more lane, then we’ll stop. In San Francisco, we’ve broken the cycle. We’re tearing down freeways, and every time we do, a forgotten neighborhood bursts forth with activity. It’s a breath of fresh air. You should try it.
