Trash Fees and Police Funding -- Miles Apart

Share

I am disappointed, but not surprised, that The Times supports another so-called “fee” increase on homeowners (editorial, April 21). While more police officers is certainly a good idea, the problem is the way that Mayor James Hahn intends to fund them -- by raising trash collection fees. There is no logical connection between trash collection and policing. Therefore, such an idea is really just another tax hike aimed at homeowners. Any funding increase for more police should be broadly based, and any revenue from trash collection should go toward same. Perhaps if government would practice such a policy, taxpayers could see where tax money is being spent.
