Death Sought in 1995 Subway Gas Attack
From Times Wire Reports
Prosecutors demanded a death sentence for a doomsday cult guru accused of masterminding a sarin gas attack on a Tokyo subway that killed 12 people and sickened thousands on March 20, 1995. Shoko Asahara, who once claimed more than 10,000 followers in the Aum Supreme Truth cult, is charged with ordering the rush-hour attack and other crimes.
Defense lawyers, who blamed his followers, will make their final arguments in October, but a verdict is not expected until March.
