Explosives used for road building detonated in a northern Pakistan village today, killing 45 people and injuring 150, officials said.

The explosives were in the home of a contractor, Waris Khan, who died in the blast, police official Hussain Khan said.

The explosion happened at 2 a.m., and several homes in the village caught fire, the policeman said. Many of the victims were women and children, and police were searching for more bodies.

It was believed that an electrical short circuit caused a fire in the home’s storage area, igniting the explosives, said an Interior Ministry official.
