Judge Rejects Bid to Halt Fee Hikes at UC
A legal bid to halt 30% fee increases for 6,300 students in professional schools on University of California campuses was turned down Wednesday by San Francisco Superior Court Judge James Warren.
An injunction to stop the increases was sought by plaintiffs who contended that UC has repeatedly promised, in various university publications, not to increase professional school fees for students already enrolled.
A UC spokesman said the system has no such policy to bar fee increases and that it raised professional school fees reluctantly because of the state budget crisis.
Jonathan Weissglass, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said his clients will press their case, which also seeks refunds for UC students who paid double-digit, systemwide fee increases during this year’s spring and summer terms. No date was set for the next court hearing in the case.
