Ships Begin Whale Hunt Despite Protests

Three ships commissioned by Iceland’s government left port to begin a six-week minke whale hunt, hoping to kill 38 of them despite protests. Iceland says the hunt is intended for scientific research, but the United States, Britain and several other governments call it unnecessary.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare has representatives in Reykjavik, the capital, and the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior was on its way to the country.
