Government Beats No-Confidence Motion
From Times Wire Reports
India’s governing coalition easily defeated a no-confidence motion, a victory that could give Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee a crucial boost before state elections later this year.
The motion, brought by the opposition Congress Party, was defeated by a vote of 312 to 186. Still, the 1 1/2-day debate gave the opposition a chance to accuse the government of incompetence and corruption.
The motion was brought after the Defense Ministry refused to disclose the findings of a report probing corruption allegations.
