Egypt has arrested 37 men suspected of belonging to a banned Islamist group that took part in a violent campaign to overthrow the government in the 1990s, security sources said.

The high state security prosecutor ordered that the men be detained, accusing them of possessing pamphlets supporting the ideas of Gamaa al Islamiya (Islamic Group) and belonging to an illegal organization, the sources said.

The order will keep the men in jail for 15 days, although that period can be extended.
