Retired Ventura County Superior Court Judge Marvin H. Lewis died Monday at the age of 75.

After his retirement in 1988, Lewis continued to work as a fill-in judge and, at times, volunteered his services to lengthy jury trials to help ease court backlogs.

“Even in retirement, he has served the people of Ventura County for 40 years,” said Superior Court Judge David Long. “That is rather an extraordinary contribution from anyone to this community.”

Lewis worked as a stand-up comic before graduating first in his class from UCLA law school in 1955.

He is remembered for his frequent joke-cracking, as well as his legal acumen.

He worked at an Oxnard law firm before his appointment to the Municipal Court in 1963.

He was elevated to the Superior Court in 1966.
