Defense Chief Quits Over Failed Mutiny
Philippine Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes resigned, becoming the second government casualty of a July 27 military mutiny attempt. He said he was stepping down because of efforts to undercut democracy and besmirch and divide the armed forces.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s spokesman, Ignacio Bunye, said Arroyo accepted the resignation “with deep regret” and had assumed the defense portfolio temporarily.
Military intelligence chief Brig. Gen. Victor Corpus quit days after the mutiny, which officials called part of a coup plot.
