Peru’s beleaguered president, Alejandro Toledo, named a party ally and consensus-builder as his fourth prime minister in 2 1/2 years after the popular Beatriz Merino quit over a volley of media attacks.

Carlos Ferrero, 62, the head of Congress for Toledo’s party, was once a lawmaker for disgraced ex-President Alberto Fujimori but switched to Toledo’s camp in 2000 after accusing Fujimori of increasing authoritarianism.
