Eleven passengers were killed when a bus traveling from Germany to France hit a concrete highway divider in southern Belgium and burst into flames.
Most of the victims were college students who were trapped as the bus was consumed by flames. Eric Thiebaut, the mayor of the town of Hensies, which is near the crash site, said an American was among those killed. Officials at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels could not be reached for comment.
The nationalities of other victims were still being established, Thiebaut said. Many of the passengers were from the Balkans and former Soviet republics.
