President’s Daughter Backs Journalist’s Case

Just days after an opposition journalist was jailed in a case condemned as flawed by governments and human rights groups, the Kazakh president’s daughter, Dariga Nazarbayev, questioned the man’s guilt and called for an appellate review. Sergei Duvanov, 50, was sentenced to 3 1/2 years on charges of raping a 14-year-old girl.
The opposition said the case was fabricated to silence a prominent critic of President Nursultan A. Nazarbayev. The trial was closed and had no jury.
