From Times Wire Reports

The former town president of Cicero woke up behind bars, her first full day of an eight-year sentence for swindling $12 million from the Chicago suburb.

Betty Loren-Maltese, 53, reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, Calif., five minutes before the noon Friday deadline, according to prison officials.

Loren-Maltese had been set to begin her racketeering sentence April 1 but was ordered to report early so she couldn’t gamble away money the government wants to recover.

Prosecutors have said Loren-Maltese bet $18 million at casinos in the Chicago area and in Las Vegas and tried to hide her gambling from the government.
