From Times Wire Reports

Public outrage over new crimes by inmates freed early from prison has pushed Gov. Paul E. Patton to halt his program of early release for prisoners convicted of nonviolent crimes.

Patton announced that he was suspending the cost-saving program that already has freed 883 inmates since it was put into effect in December.

An additional 200 convicts were set to be released this month, state authorities said.

Four of the early-released prisoners had allegedly committed new crimes, including one rape case and another involving bank robbery.
