To Make L.A. Unlivable Add Millions of People

Share

Re “6 Million More Pieces in Area’s Population Puzzle,” Jan. 29: The numbers speak for themselves: There is no way in the world that the Los Angeles region can decently accommodate 6 million -- or even 1 million -- more people. The area is already so overcrowded that much of it resembles Mexico City or Tokyo or Shanghai.

It’s time to stop overlooking the basic source of these millions of new people in California -- 4 million since 1990 and more millions to come. But the new millions are not inevitable. Almost all of California’s population increase is due to immigration from abroad, legal and illegal. If our benighted Congress would only cut total legal immigration per year from its absurd million per year down to our traditional input of about 200,000 we might have a chance to save California and even Los Angeles from being totally unlivable.
