Health-Care Funds Provide a Fig Leaf
I had to read to the very end of “Hospitals to Get $150-Million Infusion” (Feb. 5) to learn about the real effect of this federal money on our county health system. “The present deal does not solve costly structural problems within the health department, and [director of the county Department of Health Services Dr. Thomas] Garthwaite said L.A. County may have to look anew for cuts in a couple of years.” U.S. Rep. Jane Harman (D-Venice) calls the agreement “a long-awaited step forward.” This is not a step forward. It is a fig leaf over the naked truth that our current health-care system is unsustainable.
