Shipshape and bay-side on private Lido Isle

Times Staff Writer

Industrialist D. James Bentley, an inventor of disposable surgical items, lived in this house on Lido Isle from the time he bought it in about 1981 until he died in 1986. Since then, his family has continued to own the home, which is in many ways reminiscent of a ship. As a youth, Bentley was in the Navy.

About this house: It was built in 1971 and refurbished in the late ‘80s. The nearly 100 feet of bay frontage could be configured to accommodate a 100-foot-plus yacht.

The living and dining rooms as well as the master suite, with its sitting room, his and hers bathrooms and kitchenette, face the bay. A waterside room looks like a ship’s cabin.

The home also has a pool, a spa with a fountain and panoramic bay and sunset views.

Asking price: $12 million

Size: The home has five bedroom suites in about 10,000 square feet. Its triple lot is rare on the private Newport Beach island, where there are 266 waterfront homes. Island residents have their own yacht club and the use of eight tennis courts.

Features: Among features are a separate two-room guest quarters, a four-car garage, a workshop, a marble stairway and a walnut-paneled study.

Where: Lido Isle in Newport Beach

Listing agent: Bill Cote, Cote Realty Group, Newport Beach, (949) 760-1900
