Gless & Daly, yes; ‘Cagney & Lacey,’ no

Don’t call this week’s reunion between Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly “Cagney & Lacey: The Later Years.”

The two actresses, who played New York police officers for six years on the groundbreaking police drama, are not reprising their most famous roles. And there’s more than a little friction between their characters this time.

Gless is a guest star on Tuesday’s installment of CBS’ “Judging Amy,” which stars Daly and Amy Brenneman. Gless plays a social services supervisor who comes to town to follow up on complaints lodged against Daly’s character, Maxine, a social worker.

“I was a little nervous about getting back together with Tyne this time around,” said Gless, currently a regular on Showtime’s “Queer As Folk,” which shoots in Toronto. “This is her show, it was her set. I wanted her to be pleased. But once we had our first rehearsal, it was ‘bang.’ It was like we never stopped working together. We’re just very much in tune with each other.”

Off-stage, the two have remained close friends, getting together whenever Gless comes to town from Toronto or her Miami home, which she shares with “Cagney & Lacey” executive producer Barney Rosenzweig.

“Cagney & Lacey” made TV history as the first crime series to feature two female characters in the central roles.

But even though there were four “Cagney & Lacey” movies following the end of the series in 1988 that drew significant viewership, Gless said there is little chance for another “Cagney & Lacey” project, explaining that it’s simply not a high priority for CBS.
