Bishop’s Killer Slain in Prison Riot

An ex-military officer convicted in the 1998 assassination of Roman Catholic Bishop Juan Gerardi was decapitated along with five other inmates in a prison riot in Guatemala City, officials said.
Ex-Sgt. Maj. Obdulio Villanueva was serving a 30-year sentence for Gerardi’s murder. Gerardi was a human rights activist who accused the military of atrocities in Guatemala’s 1960-96 civil war.
