Lesbian and Gay Service Members

Share

Last weekend I drafted a will for a young female U.S. service member and her female domestic partner. This couple is facing the prospect of war in Iraq and wanted to have their affairs in order before one of them departs for the Middle East. It was a sobering experience. Thousands of gays and lesbians serving in our armed forces face extra, unfair burdens during this difficult time. Issues of inheritance, life insurance, medical powers of attorney, housing, even child custody are complicated by the military’s oppressive “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

This policy forces service members to mislead and lie about whom they love and will rely on in the event they are injured or incapacitated. It is time to end this inhumane policy. Lesbian and gay service members should be allowed to serve openly with the knowledge and peace of mind that their loved ones have security when they are sent abroad to face war.
