Despite the threat of a U.S.-led war, 14,000 health workers will spread out across Iraq next week to immunize more than 4 million children against polio, the U.N. Children’s Fund said today.

“No matter what the global situation, we cannot shrink from the ongoing work of reaching out to help them,” said UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy.

The program is being led by Iraq’s Health Ministry. UNICEF also is supporting speeded-up vaccinations against measles, which kills more children in Iraq than any other disease.
