From Times Wire Reports

A historic boathouse near the Oakland Estuary used for decades by the UC Berkeley men’s rowing teams has been given a new lease on life.

The boathouse, built in 1924, was slated for destruction to make room for a condominium development, but the developer has responded to a public outcry by agreeing to move the building.

The boathouse will be incorporated into a new training facility to be used by men’s and women’s teams at Berkeley. The women’s teams have been training at a separate facility.

UC Berkeley has long been a dominant power in the world of collegiate rowing. The men’s team represented the United States at the 1948 Olympics and won two gold medals. More recently, the men’s team has won four consecutive national championships.
