Security Tight as Former Spy Chief Goes on Trial

Vladimiro Montesinos, the former spy chief who was once Peru’s most feared man, went on trial at a Lima prison guarded by hundreds of police commandos.
“It is the beginning of the public trial of probably the most corrupt man in the history of Peru,” said special state attorney Ronald Gamarra.
Montesinos faces charges including drug trafficking, arms dealing and directing a death squad, but the current case concerns a relatively minor charge of influence-peddling to win release of his ex-mistress’ jailed brother.
