Chavez Demands Prison for Foes; Protests Held

President Hugo Chavez demanded 20-year prison terms for two prominent opponents who directed a strike that devastated Venezuela’s economy. Carlos Fernandez, head of Venezuela’s largest business chamber, and Carlos Ortega, leader of its biggest labor group, are charged with treason and other crimes.
Fernandez is in custody. Thousands protested his arrest in Maracaibo, and hundreds rallied in Caracas, the capital.
