From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Former major league pitcher Dennis Ribant was arrested Friday on suspicion of filing false state income tax returns and attempting to bribe an auditor, authorities said.

Ribant, 61, who played six seasons in the major leagues, was taken to Orange County Jail after his arrest by state Franchise Tax Board investigators, said Barry Gilbert, a spokesman for the agency.

His bail was set at $50,000, Gilbert said.

A jail spokeswoman said Ribant had posted bail and was released. He is scheduled to be arraigned next week.
