Robert Stephens Jr., 89; Nuremberg Prosecutor, Georgia Congressman
Robert G. Stephens Jr., 89, a Georgia congressman who also helped prosecute Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg, died Thursday in Athens, Ga., after a long illness.
Stephens served in the House from 1961 to 1977 after a decade in the state General Assembly.
A native of Atlanta, Stephens was a descendant of Alexander H. Stephens, vice president of the Confederacy.
Robert Stephens graduated from the University of Georgia and its law school.
He was a lieutenant colonel in the Army during World War II.
At Nuremberg, he served on the staff of chief prosecutor Robert Jackson, helping prepare cases against Nazi war criminals.
After the war, Stephens practiced law and served as city attorney in Athens, where the downtown federal building is named after him.
