Century City: Factor In Traffic and Green Space

“Planners OK Office Complex for Site of Shubert Theatre” (Feb. 14), on the Planning Commission’s approval of the project to replace the ABC Entertainment Center in Century City, described the proposed complex as only 100,000 square feet larger than the existing one. A closer look reveals that the center now contains 332,856 square feet of office space, while the proposed project will increase office space to 719,924 square feet. The real issue here is rush-hour traffic and the obvious effect of more than doubling the existing office space. Whatever the City Council decides, it should base its decision on the relevant numbers and common sense.

As a neighbor who supports the new project planned for the old ABC Entertainment Center and one who spoke at the city hearing, I just wanted to add a few fine points to what you reported. The new plan includes a 3.5-acre landscaped plaza to replace the existing windy, slippery, barren space that drives pedestrians indoors. Neighbors are looking forward to the trees and grass, which will be a welcome addition to a community otherwise lacking in green space. Those who decry the lack of urban planning in our city should take a look at this project. It will bring human-scale, inviting amenities to what is now a cold and sterile commercial environment. As a resident of Century City, I can’t wait.
