Opposition Leader Put Under House Arrest
A leading opponent of President Hugo Chavez who helped spearhead a two-month national strike was put under house arrest after a judge struck down a treason charge but left standing two other serious counts.
Carlos Fernandez, president of the Fedecamaras business chamber, had been seized Wednesday by federal agents.
A judge struck down three of the charges against Fernandez but upheld charges of rebellion and incitement, one of his lawyers said. An arrest order was also issued for another strike leader, labor chief Carlos Ortega, who remained in hiding.
